Preparing your home
for the Arizona Summer
As summer approaches in the Sonora Desert it is time for
residents of the state of Arizona to take a look at what
they can do to reduce the cost of cooling their homes and
minimizing the effects of the harsh Arizona sun on their
furniture, carpets and rugs.
Custom made Phoenix window coverings can greatly reduce the
energy lost through inefficient windows. Each year, the
local utility companies increase the per kilowatt cost of
electricity resulting in higher electric bills for
residents. One of the most efficient and rewarding
ways to reduce the amount of electricity used in a home is
to replace or enhance old blinds, shutters and curtains with
new ones that close tighter and hold more of the expensive
cool air in the home.
This can make a home more comfortable by reducing the heat
that is allowed in through the windows.
A side effect of having properly fitted window coverings is
that they also stop the suns damaging rays from reaching
carpets, rugs and furniture. It can take as little as a
couple of months for sun fading damage to become visible.
Furniture may become "sun bleached" and floor coverings can
get stripes or entire sections that are exposed to the sun
daily may fade.
Custom made Phoenix window coverings also give you light
and privacy control and are available in many colors and
materials. The most common window blinds sold on the
internet, department stores, home improvement stores etc are
slat blinds. Most of these are imported blinds that consist
of horizontal slats, usually of metal or vinyl, connected
with string in a way that they can be rotated to allow light
to pass between the slats.
According to Chris Tornabere, owner of Superior Window
Covering a metro Phoenix window treatment company, "a
typical Arizona home, nearly 50% of all heat gain is from
the windows". Tornabere advises home owners to look
for blinds that will provide the maximum shade for the
window. "Honeycomb, wood blinds and faux wood blinds are far
superior to aluminum and roller blinds. Look for colors that
face the plate glass to be a reflective color like white to
get the most savings. That way, you'll reduce the need for
air conditioning and you will save energy".
